Players control a journalist, who one day gets a film strip via the post office from Lizbert Megafig, a disfavored voyager. Lizbert subtleties the baffling Snaktooth Island, occupied by animals called Bugsnax who are “half bug and half tidbit”, and urges the journalist to go to the island and archive them for the world to see. Interested, the journalist advances onto the island, just to find from Lizbert’s colleague Filbo Fiddlepie that she has disappeared, and the wide range of various Grumpuses that joined her on her undertaking have dispersed. Filbo demands that the journalist assist him with taking the others back to their home of Snaxburg so they may unite as one and discover what happened to Lizbert.
